Table of content
Reusable menstrual discs are an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to traditional period products. Whether new to menstrual discs or looking to improve your experience, this guide covers everything you need to know - from insertion and removal to cleaning and storage.
What is a Menstrual Disc?
A reusable menstrual disc is a flexible, round silicone or medical-grade polymer device designed to sit at the base of the cervix and collect menstrual fluid. Unlike cups, which create a seal in the vaginal canal, discs rest in the vaginal fornix. They offer up to 12 hours of protection and can hold more fluid than tampons or pads.
Benefits of Using a Menstrual Disc
- Eco-conscious: Reduces waste compared to disposable products.
- Long wear time: Up to 12 hours of protection.
- Mess-free period sex: Worn higher in the vaginal canal, it allows for penetrative sex without removal.
- Capacity: Holds more than most menstrual cups.
- Comfort: Designed to contour to your body.
How to Insert a Reusable Menstrual Disc
- Wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and unscented soap.
- Find a comfortable position: Try squatting, sitting on the toilet, or putting one leg up.
- Fold the disc: Pinch it in the middle to create a figure-eight or taco shape.
- Insert: Slide it back and down at a slight angle, aiming towards the tailbone.
- Tuck the rim: Once inserted, push the front rim up behind the pubic bone to secure it in place.
Tip: Using a water-based lubricant can help if you have trouble inserting.
How to Remove a Reusable Menstrual Disc
- Wash your hands first.. Get comfortable: Squat or sit on the toilet.
- Hook a finger under the rim (usually the front) and gently pull the disc out, keeping it level to avoid spills.
- Empty the contents into the toilet.

Note: Removal can be messy at first - practice in the shower if you're concerned.
Cleaning Your Menstrual Disc
During Your Cycle:
- Rinse with warm water after each use.
- Use a mild, unscented soap or menstrual cup/disc wash.
- Avoid harsh chemicals, antibacterial soaps, or oil-based products.
Between Cycles:
- Sterilise by boiling the disc in water for 3-5 minutes or by using a menstrual cup steriliser.
- Let it air dry thoroughly before storing.
Storage Tips
- Store your disc in a breathable pouch (usually included with purchase).
- Avoid airtight containers, as they can trap moisture and encourage bacterial growth.
- Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Most reusable discs last up to 5 years with proper care. Replace yours if:
- It has cracks, tears, or signs of degradation.
